Check for vapor lock. The symtoms are similar, truck stalls and doesn't
want to start again without wide open throttle and a lot of cranking.
M-37's and 43's are famous for this. There should be a heat shield
above the fuel pump. This is sometimes removed by the unknowing as it is
in the way when working on the fuel pump. If it is not there, try some
insulation (non-flammable) above the pump to see if it helps. I have
also insulated the fuel line from the pump to the carb on mine. If you
have a clear fuel filter and this is the problem you will see fuel
"boiling" when the truck is hot.
I have had one guy tell me he had nothing but trouble with the Carter
ETW1 carb. I have never had a single problem with mine and I know of 3
or 4 other trucks running there original carbs with no problem.
Somewhere I have the 5 or 6 pages from a 50's carter manual for that
specific carb. If you become convinced it's the carb send me your snail
mail address and I will send you a copy.
