You didn't miss too much in Woodson Bridge.. It is usually a Real Quite meet..
It always seems to be.. everyone just wants to kick back and take a
breather after the hectic summer months..
Sorry to hear about your "Breakdown" Plight. It sounds so familiar, Don't
feel bad, I think we've all been there at one time for another (some of
more than others (:>).................
There were some interesting "Brakedown Stories" and the National Meet in
Portland this year.. There was a group of collectors from Europe that
Shipped their vehicles to New Yark - then "Convoyed" across America to the
Nationals.. And then there was the bunch from Alaska that shipped the
Vehicles by container to Seattle and then convoyed home up the ALCAN
Hiway...
But too bad you haven't made Winnemucca yet. This year was the "Second
Annual" so as you can see, it has alot of growing up to do yet. Great
bunch of people involved in putting it on...... and that come to it..
..Just the experience of driving up and parking a Half Track (with gun) in
front of the Casino...(in the "Loading and Unloading Only Zone" of
course!), unloading four women in camoflague & dogtags, leaving the Half
Track without any one asking us to "Move It"...and going in for lunch was
worth the 1500 mile round trip for me......
....... The looks of the Tourists on the Gambling Buses was Choice .......
...I think they were trying to figure out What Forces had just invaded ...
.We made a point of driving our vehicles through town on a regular basis.
Winnemucca offers lots of Nevada Sand to set up Camp in.. The driving range
available is a 200 acre piece of private property that is acquired for the
event. It has good climbing hills and obsticales that will challenge any
"Military Force" out on manervers.
A local "Civil War" ReEnactment goup camped with us and had instructional
tours of their "Military Camp"... Complete with horses and Morning Bugle
Call....

Planning a "GOOD" Meet takes alot of forethought.. The first one is always
the worst and works for a testing ground to "fine tune" the final product..
It usually starts as a core of people who enjoying being together and
playing with their toys... In this case Military Equipemnt.. Having
Activities to bring the group together - HELPS... and things like a Trophy
for the "Most Unique use of Military Equipment" is a fun challenge....
Another Fun thing to do is a "USO Dance" on Saturday night.. There is
always Parades through the host community and a day "Open to the Public"
where we do the PR work with the locals that come out to look. - Swap
Meets are a must - (keeps us women happy while you boys play with your
toys)
Tie the "theme" of the meet into any Military history of:
1. The host community / region
2. Comparable terrain and weather conditions of Famous Battles...
Provide Obstical Course.... and maybe a Poker Run..........
3. Theme meets.... focusing on specific classifications of equipment...
Provide Educational material for this topic.. as well as examples of
history..
("Wouldn't a Mash 4077 Camp be fun to duplicate ?")
I'll do some digging here and put together a list of Runs in our area..
(I would be interested in hearing about other runs in the Western US.....)
We Camp Military Style year round... We live in a Customized Bus w/ camonet
& O.D.Green Canvas Tarps for patio covers.. Our "Service Truck" is a '53
M37 with a Covered Military Mechanics trailer. 105mm shell boxes work
great as Camp Boxes.. My outdoor kitchen sports used Military Mess
equipment.. We use an ex-Marines Special Forces field radio as our mobile
base station (Worldwide Communications) and Military field radios
(shortrange Communications).. (and then there is always the "NET" via our
onboard computer and a cell phone)... My hunting rifle is a 30-cal. M1
Paratrouper model with folding stock and pistol grip... Military Issue. We
use Military snowshoes, clothing (my winter boots are Tanker Boots - even)
We setup remote camps for a business... We are a Civilian Contractor to the
Federal Government during disasters such as Fires, Floods, Oil Spill,
Earthquakes, Hurricanes... etc... There are times I sleep 100 yards from
where Black Hawks take off and land..
Other times we contract to Hunters, High Country Photographers,
Birdwatchers or any group of people who want to meet in the High
Country.......................
We're pretty socked in with snow right now. We have paths with 4 ft snow
walls that lead to different destinations.. kind of like a maze.. (One path
goes to the truck, another to the compost pile and another to the
outhouse.)...........
We were out playing in the snow the other night with our partner and his
wife... cruising around in his M-432 British Armored Troup Carrier... and
thought.. this is way too much fun. The M-432 is sheduled for the paint
shop here soon
....... so we party, while we got'em ........
Is anyone else enjoying the Winter Snow with their Military Equipment??
