I would bet if it had an M38 body, it is likely an M38. Did it have a
small almost square glovebox on the passenger's side, or no glove box
at all? The M38 had a small glovebox but the CJ didn't. Did it have
the indentations for the shovel and axe on the passenger side below the
"door"? If so, again it is M38. Finally, under the heeod, did it have
24 volt electrical system or 6 volt. Also, did it have a waterproof
ignition system? Is so, then it is an M38. Where was the parking brake
handle? M38 was left of the steering column and the CJ in the center of
the dash. These are but a few of the difference to distinguish a CJ-2
from an M-38. If it is a CJ-3, it should have the high hood which is
easy to distinguish from the CJ-2, M-38 or MB/GPW.

One really quick way to see if it has a MB running chassis and running
gear is to look for the steering bellcrank. The MB/mounted the
bellcrank on the axle, the CJ series mounted it on the frame. If you
have an honest "WWII" jeep you can find this telltale sign very
quickly. Also look at the rear shock mounts. If an MB/GPW they will
mount such that they protrude into the rear floor. That is why MB/GPWs
have what are called "doghouses" in the rear floor. They provide
clearance for the rear shocks and mounts.

There are numerous other difference. If you would like a more detailed
description, contact me off line.
