Don't get panicky. Does your jeep have the data tags on the glove compartment
door? There should be three of them. The one in the middle should have your
jeep's serial # and date of delivery stamped into it. Then you must look on
the left (driver's side) frame rail just behind the front shock absorber
mount there is a flat space there that should have your serial # stamped into
it. The tag # and frame # should be the same. Your vehicle may be ok without
the script body. Not all the 42 Fords had it, only the early ones. So you
need to find your serial# and date of delivery on the data tag. Your serial
# will tell you almost nothing about where your vehicle served. The only way
you will ever know this information is if some form of unit marking still
exists on the bumper or else where. Has your jeep been sandblasted? If so you
can kiss alot of important info good-bye. Most importantly your vehicle's
registration # will have been sandblasted away. Once it is gone you will
never know for sure what it was but estimates can be made later. Keep in mind
that your serial # and registration # are not the same thing. The
registration # was the official military identification # for that particular
vehicle and was painted on both sides of the hood, in blue-drab, at the
factory when the vehicle was accepted for service by the Army Quartermaster's
Department on the date of delivery stamped on your data plate. This is the
number that the government used to identify and assign this vehicle
throughout it's service life and has no connection to or corellation with the
manufacturer's serial #. But that doesn't mean that your serial # is not
important, I can tell you much more about your truck when I know the Serial #
and DoD. P.S. on early jeeps the registration # was also painted on
the left rear of the back body panel. This provides a second chance for its
redemption if it has been removed from the hood. Find the #s, then we can
tell you if they match.
