Military Vehicles, March 1997,: M-37 Fender Cutout

On looking over my '51 M-37 I noticed that on the right fender below the
gas can bracket is a retangular cut-out covered by a metal plate. The
cut-out measures approx. 3/5 in. It looks too uniform to be hacked in and
the plate covering it is too neat. Therefore, I'm assuming (which could get
me into trouble) its orginial to the vehicle. The $64 question is "what is
this cut-out for"? Any ideas?
