I did not mean to imply that you should not initially grease the bearings. My
comments were regarding trying to keep the gear oil (GO) out and in the
differential.

On the WW2 Chev and GMC trucks, the GMC's with the split axles had a seal that
grips the axle. On the Chev's and GMC banjo axled trucks, it was an after
thought and presses against the inside of the axle flange. All the tolerances
can add up to the seal being pressed too tight against this flange. This will
destroy the seal and leave rubber particles in with the bearings.

Out of the 1st four I did, two failed within a few miles. As I don't do water,
I don't bother with them any more. That was 15,000+ miles ago.
