Get this, Last night I was cleaning parts of my 44 GPW with the ole spinning
wire wheel. I was cleaning a bunch of old undercoating off of the body
mounting bolts and washers when I noticed that one of the thick washers had
some grooves in it. I cleaned it down to bare metal to see if the "grooves"
had split or weakened the washer when I realized that they weren't grooves.
They were digits! Thats "numbers"
for those from Rio Linda. The bottom washer of one of the long mounting
bolts had been stamped 9873. Why in the hell would anyone number a washer
that was completely out of sight on the bottom of a jeep you ask? Here's what
I think. The four
digits 9873 are the last 4 digits of the jeep's registration # and were
placed there to identifiy vehicles that were stolen by other units who
painted over or otherwise changed the vehicles reg. # to conceal its
identity. Pretty slick eh? The body and frame of this jeep match each other
and all the original body bolts were in place (some rusted in place) when I
bought the jeep so I have probably been divinely blessed with the four digits
of my vehicle's Reg # that I did not know. Don't go tear your jeep apart
looking for the reg# stamped on some washer or part but if you do ever find
anything else like this let me know. Sadly I do not know this vehicle's reg #
so cannot prove definitively that these numbers mean what I think they mean,
but at least now I can make an educated guess as to my GPW's reg # instead of
just guessing blindly at it.
