I was under the impression that diesel oil, when lighter-grade oil was not
available, and not gasoline was the US ARMY recommended additive in these
days... I don't know about the Russian Winter nor the Weasel TM, though...
There was also a STRONG recommendation to change the oil more often in the
winter and flush the oil tank or the crankcase with kerosene, to get rid of
the acid sludge formed by water condensation mixed with oil, which could
stay strapped in the oil lines and freeze... If you drive your Mil-Veh for
short distances only , as most of us do, change the oil OFTEN! I would also
say that, unless your engine is squeaky clean, stay away from detergent
oils, as they will loosen plaques of hardened gums off any metal in contact
with oil, and, well... that's not too good!
There have been some debate about using modern multi-grade oils in WWII
engines.. I personally think that these oils are too fluid to allow enough
oil pressure to build up. Unless you can shim or adjust your oil pump to
increase pressure, then stay with the TM-recommended grades of oil....
