Concerning the thinning of oil with gasoline in low temperture:

After paratrooping with the 82nd and 101st during WWII, my father "saw the
light" (his terms) and re-upped in the Air Force, specifically as
active-duty in the Missouri Air National Guard, where he worked his way up
to Chief Master Sergeant, NCOIC of the Flight Line and Aircraft Maintenance
at Lambert Field in St. Louis (the position from which he retired with 33
yrs in).

He tells me that, in the days of recip aircraft engines, it was SOP to thin
engine oil with avgas. Being especially volatile, the avgas vaporized out
of the oil even in the very low temps aloft. I didn't get the ratios, as
I'm sure they would be different for aircraft than for regular ground
vehicles, but I could jog his memory should anyone want me to.
