I have the manual TM9-8031-2 Power Train Body and Frame for 3/4 Ton Cargo
Truck M37, M43, and V41. It gives pretty good details explaining how to
service the Braden LU4 winch. However, I do not see anywhere in the manual
that it says to put oil inside the cable drum.
What it does say is:
Lubrication: Remove 1/8-inch pipe plugs from lubricant level openings in worm
housing assembly and clutch housing assembly. Remove 3/4-inch pipe plugs
from filler openings in worm housing and clutch housing. Fill housings with
universal gear lubricant until lubricant just runs out of the level openings.
Install plugs.
I assume that the oil leaks into the cable drum around the seals. Does
anyone know if this is correct or not?

I would appreciate help from anyone with experience on the Braden LU-4
winch on the M37 with the following:
1. When I disassembled the winch, there was about a cup of gear oil
inside the cable drum itself. Do you add oil to the drum before
reassembly, or is it transferred there thru movememt of the gears?
2. Can the aluminum end housings be welded? A small piece is broken out
of the rim around the drum at the bottom of the winch housing. I want to
fill it in and smooth out the housing.
Thanks for any help.
