I have a chance to purchase what appears to be a Dodge Carryall. The owner
says it's a 1940 VC, and that there were only 40 made so I am hopping that
you folks can identify it for me.
The vehicle body looks like a WC17, with the spare tire mount on the right
side and rear bumperetts, but the pintle hook is missing. The rear doors
are intact and open as a WC17, up and down. Now the weird part. The fenders
are all rounded and there is a civilian grille, but it does have front
frame hooks. The headlights are fender mounted and have painted chrome
rings with what looks like marker light housings mounted on top. The small
lights have clear faceted lenses installed. A look inside revealed a
civilian dashboard with a wooden floorboard and what appeared to be a
battery box in front of the drivers seat. There were no transfer levers
visible so I assume it is a 2 wheel drive but couldn't look underneath to
verify this. Under the hood looks all original and once again civilian
except for 1/4" of dust. The vehicle is definitely military, as the hood
number is very visible and the white paint is peeling big time to reveal
flat O.D. paint. It's in fairly good condition as the roof has been covered
with a sheet of roofing paper and it has been parked under large pine trees
so there is not a lot of rust.
I am curious as to what it is and is it worth fooling with?
Should I restore it, part it out, or forget it?
If I decide to restore it are parts available?
I've restored a few jeeps but never messed with the Dodges.
Thanks for your information.
