I have a problem that is driving me nuts! Or put another way, driving my
M38 is driving me nuts. About every other time I take the old girl out on
the road, she lets me down.
After about 10 minutes of normal suburban driving the engine begins to lose
power, sputtering down to almost nothing. The throttle action seems "mushy",
not responsive. With a few pumps I can rev it back to life a few times, but
finally it stalls entirely. Then I can crank and restart the engine a few
times, make a little more progress down the road, then the cycle repeats.
Finally, the engine dies and refuses to restart till I leave it sit five
minutes or so. Then I can restart and nurse the sputtering engine home.
The symptoms seemed to point to fuel starvation -- the mushy gas pedal action
particularly. I measured the output of the fuel pump at about 3 lbs -- that
seems low. Opinions?
In the shop I can sometimes reproduce the rough idle. Once while it was
sputtering like that I quickly connected a can of gas on the floor directly
to the input of the fuel pump. It sputtered just the same. Hmmm. That
rules out a plugged fuel filter or lines ... perhaps something blocking the
carb? Last time I thought I found the trouble when I cleaned the carb intake
screen, but not so.
Someone thought it might be vapor lock -- but the engine isn't really warmed
up when it strikes.
I am getting tired of just driving around the block -- I've got to get this
problem fixed so I can enjoy the jeep and not be afraid to drive too far from
home <<sniff>>. Any ideas?
