Chaz,
Are you serious about the welds or are you trying to jerk peoples'
chains? If you are serious, let me know. I can find this out for you.
Between me and a few friends I know, we should be able to find out
on the hulks we have laying around. I have the dimensions of the
hat channel under the rear floor (because I just had some made up
for my CJ-2 AgriJeep prototype), but I have to dig out the dimensions.
Know pretty much everything you asked (except why moths are
attracted to the screen. I'll let Alan explain that one! ;) ) but want
to double check to make sure. The things I do know for sure without
double checking:

1) ends of lower channel and welded ONLY on the top portion of the hat
channel. "Legs" are not welded. Rest of channel is spot welded on.
Beware of Genmarc channels because they are slightly taller than the
original.

2) Same as lower channel. Welded only on the top portion.

3) When you say rear floor step, you mean the rear floor riser? If so, it has
small tack welds every few inches right on the end of the floor panel. (At least
on the '44 MBs. I have 6 slat grille bodies that I can look at and see whether
the non-composite bodies like yours are made the same way.)

4) Spot welded. (I assume you are talking about the cowl gusset. Three holes with
a hole for a bolt on the bottom. Runs the whole height of the cowl side panel.)

7) Generally the weld doesn't go the whole length of the seam. It was pretty
much up to the person who welded it. I have seen some with large welds and
some with very small welds just on the seam with the dash edge facing the driver.

8) They should be welded.

Other ones I have to check. Pretty sure the rear panel does have a lower weld.
Repros generally use 3 welds (one in the center of the seam) instead of 2.

If anyone has an original example that contradicts this, let me know. I also
like to learn new things about these Jeeps.

If you don't like restoring Jeeps with this type of detail, don't bother emailing
me with your views. I really don't care if you or your father used an old mop to
paint Jeeps in the motor pool.
