G'day Gang,
Saw the BARC mentioned in some postings. Quite a lot
of crated-up Spare Parts for these turned up here in Australia from, I
believe, Europe. Among the spares were two AN/VRC-10 Radio Sets still
in the packing crates. One of these is now on display in my military
radio collection. I was also able to get an original Operators Manual
for the BARC - TM 55-1930-203-10. The full nomenclature for the BARC
was:
Lighter, Amphibious (BARC), Self-Propelled, Diesel, 60
Ton, 61 ft.

A few relevant details may be of interest:

Wheelbase = 28ft 6in. Wheel track = 23ft. 6in. Each wheel
independently driven
Operating Radius with 60 Ton payload = 75 miles in water, 150 miles on
land
Overall dimensions 62ft 6in long, 26ft 7in wide, height 19ft 5in
Payload (normal) 60 short tons or 125 troops
Payload (emergency) 100 short tons or 200 troops
Engines = 4 Detroit 6-71 Series diesels
All Wheel drive and All Wheel steering. If a wheel was damaged, the
BARC could be driven on three wheels as long as the payload was
redistributed to compensate.

What a Monster - Imagine trying to park that DOWNTOWN.
