Well this only just counts as military, at a stretch. Sit two right
handed people on horses, then walk them towards each other. If they
both had swords they would find it more convenient to meet right hand
to right hand for the old sword swinging bit. If they met left to left
they would be fighting across the horses head. Boring and illogical
as this may seem I have been told that this is the reason why British
traffic meets right / right, and have never had a better explanation.
Course by the time the US got going you had Colts, so the road placing
was less critical.

As an aside I have never had trouble driving left or right hookers at
home in the UK or abroad, though you left hand drive natives have real
trouble adapting to rhd especially when coupled with a stick shift.
British drivers abroad have always had to use LHD and so find it less
daunting. When did the US change from RHD to LHD (and when did Canada
for that matter? ) Gordon, Falkirk, Scotland, (at home for once)
