Hello. My name is Matthew and I am new to this list. I must say
that I am very impressed with what I am seeing so far. I have a budding
interest in purchasing a military vehicle, sparked by an article that I
read in a recent edition of American Survival Guide; in it, the author
shared his experiences in purchasing a Ferret scout car, as well as
offering advice on their maintenance and care.
My interest in military vehicles is primarily focused around
obtaining one for backwoods/off-road use; one that packs alot of power,
is relatively fuel efficient, and can take a good beating and keep on
moving. The 4 by 4's that everyone buys these days are(and this is just
my opinion) cookie-cutter vehicles that are over-priced Yuppie status
symbols. I have heard that Hummers fit that category quite nicely, being
of rather low quality with a high price tag; whether that is true or not
is a matter of discussion for another list.
Also, I am a senior in college and am on a relatively limited
budget. I recently spent a small chunk of change on repairs for my Olds
Cutlass Cierra. In addition, I plan on budgeting my money to purchase
more survival supplies and firearms throughout the year. Yes, I am a
survivalist; not, HOWEVER, a member of the extreme fringe.
Would I be better off reconditioning an old Chevy Suburban, or
actually pursuing the MV route? Quite honestly, I know little about
automobiles in general(the nitty-gritty that is).
A Ferret scout car would be nice, but I do imagine that it has a
rather high price tag. A Deuce and a half might be a better option; or
am I wrong? What about a plain old Willy's jeep? Would it be possible
to pick up a 5 ton by Osh-Kosh(or is that extremely expensive)? Also,
where could I buy such vehicles? Does the government auction them
through the DoD? And if so, would they be in decent condition, or just a
heap of scrap?
Any help that other list members could give me on my questions
will be greatly appreciated. I am looking forward to hearing you
suggestions and opinions. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Matthew R. Sherry
