Here's what the California vehicle code sez on the subject:
(1997 code, section 12804.9, excerpt)
"
<snip>
Class B includes the following:
(A) Any single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than
26,000 pounds.
(B) Any single vehicle with three or more axles, except any three axle
vehicle weighing less than 6,000 pounds.
(C) Any bus except a trailer bus
(D) Any farm labor vehicle
(E) Any single vehicle with three or more axles or a gross vehicle
weight of more than 26,000 pounds towing another vehicle with a gross
weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less.
<snip>
"
There is a bunch more that describes Classes A and C, but this was what
I believe to be relevant. Any mis-spellings are my own :}
Seems to me that any 6x6 would fall into this category, as long as the
GVWR was more than 6000 pounds. I couldn't find any exceptions regarding
non-commercial use, or Historic Vehicle plates. I'm really curious to
hear more about the guy that beat the rap!
Disclaimer: I'm a programmer, not a lawyer! This is not legal advice!
blah blah You get the idea! :}
