Hi Doug:

I believe Allison/GMC built the transmissions but I will check my TM's at
work tomorrow.
The problems with the transmissions were usually operator error. The
transmission seems to be a very heavy duty model, however, most of the ones
that have failed around here are because of operator misuse due to adding
wrong lubricant or hauling too heavy a load. As I stated in my last
posting, many fire departments used these to haul water and with a 1000
gallon tank and with water weighing approx 8 pounds per gallon, it gets
pretty tough on a transmission when trying to get to a fire in hilly
terrain. Although many problems can occur, the most frequent seems to be
burned out bands in the 1st and 2nd gear, affecting both low and high
range. Also, correct linkage alignment is a common problem, but easily
corrected. Burned out 1st and 2nd bands is what is wrong with one of mine
right now, and my other one has a bad governor (I think). A lot of these
trucks had the Memphis Equipment R.E.B. shift kit installed which helped
with the operator error. This kit allowed manual shifting from 1st through
4th gear and as long as the operator knew how to listen to his engine and
shifted accordingly. I just installed a rebuilt transmission onto a new
engine and plan to install it into one of my 211's this week, so that will
give me a chance to tear down the bad transmission this winter and see what
more I can learn.
