Actually the early CJ-2A blocks were also stamped on the side of the block like
the MBs. I have engine CJ2A-11820B (earliest one I know of) and Jeff has
CJ2A-12502 and they are side stamped. Sometime in late CJ2A-12XXX they went
to the top stamp. I have seen (and I think Jeff has one of these engines) a top
stamp with the narrow pad. They were essentially using MB castings for the early
CJ-2A engines until the 641087-L casting appeared.
