Alabama did not have a title law until 1975; as a result, anything prior to
1975 is accepted based upon the tag receipt. For resale of pre '75 vehicles
outside of Alabama, the county/state will provide a notorized letter stating
"... there is no certificate of title law in Alabama for 1974 and older year
model vehicles and only vehicle registration and tax receipt is issued."
Then it states that the attached Alabama tab number xxxx receipt is a true
and correct copy, etc..
The end results of this is that I can go into my local courthouse with a bill
of sale for a 1972 Bantam 6x6 command car, stating that I bought it from Joe
Dokes for $185 two days ago in Austin, Texas; pay the county, city, and state
taxes on the $185; and about 15 minutes and $30 later, walk out with a tag
and a notorized letter for my Bantam 6x6. The vehicle does not have to be
inspected (it doesn't even really have to exist, as long as I pay the sales
tax on buying it). If it is over 30 years old and still in basically
original condition, we can get a $10 lifetime Vintage Auto tag.
If you think this may help your title situation, contact me direct, and we'll
work out the details. Good Luck!!! Tom Campbell Birmingham, Alabama 8-)
