Tom, you need to get hold of a copy of 'TM 9-1808C', Zentmyer's spoof,
but very interesting 'Power Trains and Interchanges' The address on
my copy is Industrial Products Company, P.O. Box 2144, Toluca Lake, CA
91602, or try VPW.

It states that the 3/4 WCs use 5.83 third members in early and late
configurations, and I'd guess that your WC53 would be the early type,
and then it gives you a step-by-step procedure for the change.

Snag is that all the 3/4 WCs were factory governed to 55mph, and both
of mine, WC56 and WC53, are quite capable of reaching 55mph with the
factory set up without too much noise (they are trucks rather than cars
remember) I'd guess you have an alignment out somewhere or a very worn
diff in the back, why dont you try the following?

Drop off the front driveshaft and pull the hub drive ends, then try it,
if it will run up to 55 the problem is in the front axle somewhere.
Still horrendous to drive? then replace the front drive shaft and drive
ends, drop off the rear drive shaft and pull the halfshafts, engage
front wheel drive in the cab, and try again. If it is now OK you have
a problem in the rear diff. If it is still too awfull to drive then
maybe the transfer case or gearbox need looked at. If you are not
intending to do thousands of miles on highways I think replacing
whichever diff is causing the problem might be all you need to do, and
it would be a lot cheaper to locate one standard diff than two sets of
gears at $300 each, which was the going price last time I heard. You
can fit 1/2 ton diffs front and back but do you really want to break up
1/2 ton axles? Seems to me someone else on the list had to fit a new
rear diff some time ago because it was worn out, and in a WC53 too.
