In WW1, narrow gauge railroads were used to supply the front lines. The
roads (at least those that existed) tended to be muddy quagmires which
swallowed anything and everything.

Therefore, narrow gauge railroads were used to transport troops and supplies
to the front, and bring the dead and wounded back to the rear areas.

I believe the "standard" narrow gauge was 70 cm (centimeters). This works
out to 700mm = approx 28 inches. It is possible that other gauges were used
in different areas.
