I have the same problem on my M38A1. It slips out of 2nd gear under load
also. I suspect that it is the result of too many years being run at Camp
Lejune with the military speed limits. I investigated the problem with local
mechanics and was told that the transmission needed rebuilding. If I
remember correctly, something about syncronizers seems to be the culpret.
Someday, when I get time; I'm going to pull the entire power pack and
rebuild the engine and transmission as a unit. Maybe when the bank account
recovers from getting my M37 back on the road.
