I want to thank Lars, Gordon, and Daryl for responding to my WC51 queries. I
have more after doing some investigation work.
I have reason to believe my 1944 WC51 is an original 12 volt doe to the
following reasons (provided by Lars):
1) Big box of resistors near trailer socket and left tail light.
2) Unexplainable holes in side which were punched out (not drilled or rusted)
in a pattern that appears to have held either an antenna array or bracket.
3) An unusually large battery compartment.
Now for question time:
1) Since I plan to keep the vehicle as original as possible, I will eventually
replace the metal bed floor with one of wood. What is the proper wood and
dimensions? Also, what will weather the best, and still look right?
2) Is there any reason for the battery compartment to be on the right and
about double in size from any 1943 WC51 I have ever seen? Is it for extra
batteries for the radios?
3) My WC also appears to be 12" to 14" longer in the cab portion than earlier
models. I can slip between the spare tire and the front of the bed to get
into the vehicle from the driver's side. This is next to impossible for any
of the earlier models I have seen. Is there any special reason for this?
4) What is the best way to remove the fuel tank to have it cleaned? The WC
sat for a year, and collected rust inside of the tank. I had this happen to a
VW once, and blowing out the line doesn't work. I'd like to drop the tank,
have it steam-cleaned and possibly lined. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
5) I need a source for new fuel lines for the WC. I live in an apartment (the
WC is in my carport and my car is in the weather), so I am currently unable to
make the lines myself. Anybody know of anyplace to get steel fuel lines?
6) What are Crash Pads? Where would they be on a '44 WC51?
7) This is for future planning, but what is the correct radio for this truck?
I plan to use it in WW2 living history - I portray a soldier with the 359th
Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division (My Dad was assigned to the HQ Unit
& JAG Corps with the 90th before Korea). The truck will be towing a 57-mm
Anti-Tank Gun which is currently being built by several other members. Do I
need the BC-1000, or do I need an SCR-type of radio? Again, this is several
months down the road, but I like to be well-prepared.
That about does it. Thanks again to all those who responded the first time
around. I know I will have more questions as time marches on.
Sincerely,
Robert Ratliff
