Sounds like your carb has been apart in the past, and has been put
together again with the old gaskets. I've had occassion to strip
Carter unit recently (unfortunately) and it is a nice piece of work,
but the main gasket also has internal profiles that fit round bits
inside to make the whole thing work. I'm sure that Vintage Power
Wagons in Iowa would send you a rebuild kit for either type (Carter or
Zenith) and you could rebuild it in a couple of hours without too many
problems - gasket goo not recommended because of the internal profiles
and fine jets. Check the float shut-off operation at the main input
too - if it is stuck the carb would be under pressure all the time and
may give fuel leaks. I wouldn't expect an electric pump to give rise
to any more leakage than a mechanical one. Why not get rebuild kits
for both the pump and the carb from VPW and get the fuel system fully
operational? Worth cleaning out the dash fuel filter first too in case
you need spares for that as well.
