The original temp gauge is stricly mechanical, the gauge is
connected with a thin tube (like the oil gage, but thinner) to a bulb
mounted in the engine block. The whole thing is filled with a fluid,
usually naphta, which expands when heats up, and thus pushing on the
needle on the gage. For this thing to work, the whole thing
(gauge, line, bulbe) needs to be intact with no leaks or kinks on them.
Since your line is cut, you will have to replace the whole assembly.
The bulb is mounted on the engine head, on the right side, about the
middle of the block (close to the distibutor).
