Steve,
I used to live in Lawrence (did my grad work at KU), and, every year at
Labor Day, we went to Topeka to enjoy "Railroad Days" down at the old
airfield on the south part of town (it's a big shidig; you'll have no
trouble finding it). In addition to lots of great railroad equipment,
numerous local military units display modern equipment and various
re-enactor groups (including Civil War) do demonstrations, etc. Also lots
of old cars, agricultural equipment, and the like. Music, food,
entertainment: fun for the whole family.
Also, I used to know a guy who fooled around with M-37s out near Desoto (1/2
way between KC and Lawrence on Hwy 10): don't remember his name or know if
he's still there, but he seemed to have local contancts. . . .
