When driving down a steep grade use the same gear for the descent as would
be used to climb it. If the brakes fail, leave the transmission in gear, by
the time a failure is realized it is probably to late to grab a lower gear
(this would apply to descending a grade, not level ground). Brake failures
on mountain passes not caused by a failure of the hydraulic or air system
are due to the brake linings glazing over. This glazing is caused by heavy
braking then letting off, braking again and letting off, rather than
continuous braking.
It would probably be a good idea to stop your MV once with the hand brake
to see what it is like. I commend the Dr. for his recommendation to check
the brake hydraulic system with a strong leg before leaving the yard.
Drive conservative and Keep Them Rolling! (and stopping).
