G'day Corey,
I have converted both my Canadian Military
Pattern (CMP) vehicles to 12 volt operation. I did fit a 12v generator
and a matching regulator to take care of the charging. However, I have
been told that you can adjust the original 6 volt regulator to do that -
maybe there's someone in the group who knows something about that. As
for the gauges - there was only one on mine that needed a reduction in
voltage and that was the fuel gauge. The tank sender unit has a
resistive winding and if you double the voltage through this resistor
you will halve the current. It is that current that operates the gauge
so therefore the gauge reading will be incorrect. I went to an
electronics store and purchased a type 7805 voltage regulator (5 volt)
for use in electronic circuits. Measures about 3/4 by 1/2 inch. It has
a metal tab that can be screwed to some metalwork to use as a heatsink.
Using a couple of resistors, you can jack the regulated voltage up to 6
or 7 volts at a current of around 1 ampere. The electronic storeperson
or a local ham radio operator should be able to tell you how to do it.
The regulator and resistors should cost less than $5.

The other gauges? Well the ammeter reads amperes and is not voltage
sensitive. The Temperature gauge at least on my CMP's is a bulb and tube
type and is not electrical. And the oil pressure gauge should be just
that. A pressure gauge which is not electrical. Don't forget the change
the lamps in the instrument panel and hi-beam indicator to 12 volt.

Cheers from DownUnder,
