[MV] data plate on M38A1

Hello,
looking at my body of a 1953 M38A1 there is some small plate on the front
of the passangers side doghouse. It probably measures 1.5" by 3" or so.
My dad thinks it is a data plate of some sort, I myself am not sure though
it does resemble one. Anyone have an idea what this is ? I do not think it
is a patch for there is no rust below it.
