I was looking at the serial number on my 1951 M38 's engine this evening.
Unlike the example in the TM photograph, which shows a number that is much
like the overall jeep s/n ie "MC 20375", my engine number in the pattern
"4L R 168356".
The 4L seems clear enough (4 cyl L-head engine) but am I right in assuming
that the R stands for "replacement" and my engine was a unit built
specifically as a replacement engine?
On a related note, there seems to have been considerable research effort into
MB/GPW serial number history -- has anyone done similar work on the M38? I
would be interested in finding out more about the history of my jeep...
