Alan is right about tyre prices. I have since seen 7.50 x 16 Michelins
for sale at the same dealer here in Scotland but even with discount for
quantity and haggling they are very expensive. I noticed in Norway
that busses and commercial trucks run quite slow in the summer, in the
winter they just keep going at the same speed, but most serious users
have chains in case they need them. Private cars get studded tyres in
the winter, which give such good traction (just like driving on a dry
road most of the time) that you can get into real trouble through
overconfidence. I've managed to get my 3/4 WC's stuck on wet grass,
never mind snow and ice, and a set of chains would definately be in
order. I have noticed that many knowledgable drivers of our MVs run
the engine right up against the governor when trying to use them on
really hard going, and that this seems very effective. i suppose many
(myself included) try and drive as we would in a car, whereas the right
technique on something as large and underpowered as a DUKW would be to
rev it up till it hits the governor and just 'go for it' (horrible
expression) gordon 8-)
