I know a jeep owner in Northern Queensland (Australia) who has a March =
'42 jeep engine. He has asked me to help him identify a plate on his engi=
ne. The service plate is from October 1944 which refers to
WHITTEMORE SERV COMMAND DEPOT, AYER, MASS.
obviously an Army base, and was located at AYER. Now I've done some resea=
rch that shows AYER is about half way between Fitchburg (Worcester Cou=
nty) & Lowell (Middlesex County). Just inside Middlesex county.
Do any MASS jeep owners know of this depot, is it still there, when did =
it go and/or did it ever have a shield or emblem from the area? The shiel=
d shape is similar shape to those badges worn by service personel indicat=
ing their unit motto etc. The shield is attached to both sides of the bon=
net with the word STERLING on it. The shield appears to be brazed on.
Any ideas folks ?
Regards,
