Title:
CCKW & WW2 Chevrolet clutch adjustment
Application:
All WW2 GMC (DUKW-CCKW etc) and WW2 Chevrolets
Problem:
These clutches use a diaphram instead of individual springs and are very
suseptable to over stressing. When over stressed enough, they twist causing the
clutch to not fully disengage. I have NEVER had a CCKW clutch wear out. Two of
them have done this twisting routine and the truck is quite difficult to drive
after. It will get you home, but...
Solution:
All the manuals are incorrect save for one on the clutch adjustment on these
vehicles. The clutch should be adjusted so that it 'just' disengages about 1"
off of the floor. Forget about the 'free pedal/play' at the top.
In addition, if you have one of these clutches rebuilt, you must grind the
pressure plate in .030" increments and add shims behind the diaphram spring.
There is only one CCKW manual that has this correctly stated.
