This summer/fall I did a frame-up restoration my 52 M38A1. While I was
doing this I had a CJ5 that I put the running gear from an extra M38A1
under. I did some comparing between the body parts at the time and can
remember the following difference:
The CJ fenders are not reinforced like the M38A1. The channel that mounts
fender to the frame on the military fender continues up into the top part
of the fender. On the CJ5 it ends part way up the fender. The CJ also has
no support for the snorkle attachment. You are also correct about the
holes for the black-out drive light. It seems that there are a few more
minor differences but I can't recall them right now. I do know that the CJ
fenders will bolt to the M38A1 frame, because that is what my hunting jeep
consists of: M38A1 frame, engine, trannsmission, front and rear end with a
CJ5 body attached covered with a military M38A1 hard top and doors.
Hope this helps. Any questions, feel free to E-mail.
