My GPW has a gas can holder with a two slots (front and back) cut into
the top edges where the straps would attach. There is also a strap
bracket attached to the rear panel. I assumed that "original" WWII gas
can holders had only one slot, and the other half of the strap attached
directly to the strap bracket on the body.
The other night I was looking at one of the Tobyhanna Depot Signal Corps
jeep photos on the web, and was surprised to see a photo which clearly
indicated the strap was attached to the can holder itself, and then was
threaded up through the strap bracket on the body (and then over the
can). Can anyone shed any light on this?
Sorry if this description is muddled; it's difficult to describe without
pictures...

P.S. I have read that very early GPW's probably didn't have gas cans at
all, but I suspect most were eventually retrofitted with them, and I
like the look.
