RE: [MV] steering damper...

Steering dampers are used primarily for two reasons. One: to reduce
shock load on the steering box and the driver when striking an object on
the side of one of the front tires. This damper can prevent the
steering wheel from being jerked from the drivers hand. It can also
reduce the chance of a broken finger or thumb during this type of
situation.

The second reason that dampers are used is that they prevent front
wheel "shimmy". This is a violent side to side motion of the front
tires that normally occurs at speeds of around 30-35 miles per hour.
Front end "shimmy" is a fairly common occurrence in Jeeps and some four
wheel drive trucks. I installed one on my 47 CJ2A a number of years
ago and it cured this problem. This "shimmy" can be caused by worn
steering or front spring components. In my case, I could not determine
the real cause of the "shimmy". Therefore, I went with the damper and
it eliminated my problem. I also have a MB that I drive frequently and
have never had a "shimmy" problem. If you don't mind an incorrect
accessory, then I would leave the damper on the vehicle.

I,

My Jeep has a steering damper. What do you know about that ? Since when
was it used ?

Thanks.

Laurent.
