I believe 'Shantyboat' was mailing for info on the C2 Wrecker? I looked up
my copy of 'The Observer's Fighting Vehicles Directory - World War II'
(publ 1972) and it shows 3 (small) photos of C2s, with the following
descriptions:
PIC 1: Truck, 7.5 ton, 6x6, Tractor, Wrecking, Type C-2 (Biederman)
Hercules HXD 6-cyl, 180 bhp, 5F1Rx2, wb 189.5 (BC 48) in, 405.5x96.5x126
in, 28,000lb. Used by AAF to salvage crashed planes and to perform general
towing. Payload on fifth wheel 13,000lb. Early-style front end and cab.
PIC 2: Truck, 7.5 ton, 6x6, Tractor, Wrecking, Type C-2 (Federal 605). Spec
as Biederman. Early C-2 models had Gar Wood 10-ton (at 10-ft radius)
capacity gooseneck boom crane, 15 ft long. All AAF C-2 wreckers had
underslung winch at rear, air-asisted steering, inertia-type starter, air
springs at front.
PIC 3: Truck, 7.5 ton, 6x6, Tractor, Wrecking, Type C-2 (Federal 606, Reo
29XS). Spec as Biederman. Late model with Gar Wood 5-ton (at 8-ft radius)
telescoping boom, having lengths of 18, 22 and 26 ft. All had 110-volt DC
electric power plant of 3000-watt capacity and flood lamps.
Also, under the 'Makes & Models' introduction it lists: ...Biederman C-2,
1940-44 (G692). ... Federal 605, 606, 1940-44 (G692). ... Reo 29XS, 1941-44
(G692) ... .
Hope this is of interest to someone! If anyone needs abbreviations
explained, let me know. I could also scan the pics and mail off-line if
anyone's _really_ into the C-2s (which I'd never even heard of till I
looked them up...)
