I believe the diesel engine was invented by Otto von diesel or Rudolf
Diesel if my memory serves me correctly. The US Army had Catipillaer
develop an diesel version of the R-975 radial engine during WW2 for the
Sherman tank. It worked well but the US Army decided to stick with the
gas versions of the Sherman since adding a second fuel to the inventory
would have been difficult. I believe that there were diesel Shermans
built but they where shipped to the USSR under lend lease.
