"... The 30 Cylinder engine placed it's number-one engine in a normal
vertical position. The numbers two and five engines were installed at 45
degree angles on either side of the vertical block. Numbers three and four
were laid at a slightly less than 90 degree angle to the vertical block. ...
The five engines were geared together and operated as a single unit. This
was accomplished by bolting a gear to the flanged end (radiator end on a
tank, clutch end on a car) of each of the five crankshafts. These drive
gears meshed with and drove a centerpower unit 'driven gear'. This gear, in
turn, was connected to and drove the flywheel, clutch, and finally, the
powertrain"
so, in a strange way, it is a 'radial', but with separate crankshafts.
There are some very clear pictures in this article... I guess there is a guy
in St Paul Minn. that has one running in his M4A4 Sherman. Pretty rare
beasties.
