Gasoline (petrol) is much easier to get lit off and burns hot almost =
immediately, but diesel fuel has more BTU value per unit volume than =
gas. The real ugly part of light hydrocarbons is that they vaporize at a =
rapid rate and a vapor cloud explodes rather than burns.
Rule of thumb is the thicker and nastier the petroleum product, the more =
heat value it contains. The trick is getting it to burn. Crude oil =
storage presents a special problem as the crude not only contains the =
light ends to ignite, but also the heavy ends to burn really hot. There =
is also residual water settling out in the bottom of the tank which can =
dilute the foam that is used in firefighting or if the tank gets hot =
enough, generates steam and froths the contents of the tank out the top.
