I am going from memory here, but, the British had a 24 cylinder Napier
Sabre "H" pattern engine in the "Typhoon" fighter. I vaguely remember
something about a later "X" pattern in the "Tempest", not sure.
The "H" in the Typhoon saw lots of use, quite often, stenciled on the
cowling was a pointed message about putting the engine fire out on
start up instead of waving your arms! So perhaps it is a good thing
they never decided to use those engines in tanks!
I saw a "H" in a museum a few years back, the best way to describe it
is a "lump", very big and heavy looking.
I have never heard of either of these engines finding there way into
tanks, unlike the Merlin which in downrated form became the "Meteor"
motor.
Other than these motor's I recall seeing a 4 row radial, which had
been sectioned displayed alongside the "Spruce Goose" exhibit in
Los Angelos in 1984. Impressive to say the least, if I remember
correctly it was a 24 cylinder motor.
Regards
Doug
