The Army Museum of Western Australia is in the process of restoring a
Saracen APC and is at the stage where the vehicle is going (Rolls Royce
motor is superb and has only done around 20,000 miles) but we are having
major trouble with the braking system.
Alvis in the UK was approached to supply a new twin power valve and
cutout, but that failed and we had the original restored by a local
brake company. The wheel cylinders were re-sleeved and re-rubbered by
the same people. A number of the brake lines had to be replaced as the
pressure build up in old and rusty lines proved too much, but that too
has been fixed (fingers remain crossed).
The problem now is that the brakes are locked on and we suspect the
twin power valve and cutout may have been incorrectly assembled. The
only other possibility that occurred to us (note that we are almost
completely without any Saracen experience and are mostly flying blind
this first time), is that we may need to pressurise the accumulators.
Would a lack of pressure in the accumulators have the effect of locking
the brakes?
If not, are there any other suggestions which could help solve this
problem ?
Regards to all
Jack
