Form memory there were two studs and the rest were bolts, presumably so
that the studs could guide the head down into place. Problem with
bolts is that they are UNC, quite a coarse thread and easy to strip the
mating thread in the block. When the block has been skimmed a few
times the thread is then too shallow, so the head gasket doesn't seal,
so you try to tighten the head bolts further, so stripped bolts and
block threads.

Advantage of studs is that you set the UNC end end the block with some
sort of thread lock, and then you can put as much torque on the fine
thread nuts at the other end as you need to. Gordon 8-)
