The later M35A2s had the air shift for the front end, you look for the
retrofit kit switch hanging under the dash below the instument cluster. The
older deuces and the 5 tons have the sprague clutches which need some
slippage between the front and the rear to engage. Something about flipping
a switch and shifting in or shifting out the front end when I want it
appeals to me.
60 to 65 mph road speeds are accomplished with really big tires. you can
get about 60 mph out an M35 with 11.00 X 20s on it. I have run all over
California at 50 to 55 mph with no problems. I figure 6 hours to do 300
miles in a deuce vs 4 1/2 in my pickup. Of course I can carry alot more
stuff with a deuce and get about 8 to 10 mpg to boot

That's surprising. Is there any anti slip mechanism between the front-rear
and rear-rear diffs?
I believe on the 211 and 135 the front drive doesn't engage until some
slip is detected at the rear, is that correct? And the M35 has an air
powered locker to engage the front drive axle.
Does anyone know if lockers or limited slip diffs are available for 2 1/2
tons?
Also, does anyone know of overdrive retrofits for 2 1/2 ton trucks to make
them more suitable for the highway. With a 50-55 mph top speed, obviously
freeway driving is not really a good idea unless you are driving through
L.A. (;->) I've heard that the 5 ton trucks actually have a higher top end
of 60-65 mph.
