I decided today to disassemble my '51 M38's horn switch and see why it has
been stuck closed. Unscrewing the switch from the bottom of the steering gear
revealed a frozen, rusty mass on the top of the switch where I expected a
switch button/acutator/plunger. First off, looks like I need a new switch...
I expected a rod to be riding inside a tube from horn button down thru the
steering column, resting on top of the switch. Looking up into the switch
mounting hole into the steering gear there appears to be something in the
tube, but removing the steering wheet nut and the horn button and looking
downward shows empty tube for the first few feet.
Were my expectations correct? Was it supposed to be a single rod, or was
there some kind of two-part pushrod for the horn switch and I'm missing the
upper part?
The manuals show different sets of parts for early/late models, but it looks
like it was just one rod in all cases. I guess I've got some sort of debris
in the lower portion of the tube. Sigh...
Anyone have any advice?
