Caddy
tranny used in the M5 Stuart tank. The main exception being the high/low
reduction. If you are familiar with what a typical auto tranny looks like=
,
you
will notice the very obvious reduction unit on the back of the M211 trann=
y.

The xfer case has the same odd shape that the WW2 CCKW banjo xfer uses. =

Again, if you have seen one of these, you will remember this odd shape. I=

believe that based upon this odd shape, that the CCKW xfer will fit. Usin=
g
the
CCKW xfer in the conversion allows you to have real in/out of the front
axle
drive controlled by you and it gives you the high/low range that you will=

lose =

if you just replace the auto tranny with something else.<

Wow, they used a Caddy tranny in a tank? That's pretty amazing. That
tranny can't be all that weak, can it?

So a M211 with a CCKW transfer case would allow the use of hi-lo since th=
e
hi-lo range is in the transfer case. The manual engagement of the front
wheels would be a definite plus and it would still allow a Chevy 350 swap=
=2E =

That's pretty clean. Any idea what a CCKW transfer case goes for? =

The DOD must of disposed of most of the CCKW trucks long ago, since I nev=
er
see them for sale except for big bucks. But there are scads of M211s
floating around right now. When did the production of the CCKW trucks
cease? It seems that the M211s started production in the early 50's.

Also, I was at the local NAPA store and asked about parts for 302 GMC 6
cylinders and they had a full listing of parts available for the 302's, b=
ut
the guy said that some of the military engines were different. Any idea
how different the civy 302 is from the military version? I think someon=
e
mentioned before that the starter was in a different spot, further up the=

block. Is that pretty much it, or are the pistons, bearing, etc differen=
t
also.
