Hello List,

Well I am still doing my "home work" on what MV to acquire.
Does anyone have experience on the classic Land Rover MV ?
LWB or SWB matters not.
Basic questions are operating problems, repairs and access to parts ?
Any experience with ones that can be obtained either from UK or Aust ?

Thanks in advance for all your practical advice.

Australian Landrovers are fairly common military vehicles here. Series 2,
2A and 3 vehicles are quite easy to find and are usually quite cheap. There
are also some 110s starting to appear on the market here.

There are no real problems with the Series 2 and 2A. Many of then in
civilian hands here have had the 2 1/4 litre 4 cylinder replaced with a
Holden 186 or 202 cu in 6 cylinder as these give much improved power and
are easier to find parts for. These older Landies do have a reputation for
breaking rear axles though.

The Australian series 3 would have to be the worst military vehicle I have
ever driven. It had the Rover 2.6 litre F head (overhead inlet valve, side
exhaust valve) engine in it. It was gutless and it broke down regularly. I
don't know of anyone who didn't prefer to drive the Series 2 and 2A in
preference to the 3. However it did have the much stronger Salisbury rear
axle which very rarely fail.

The best of all Landrovers in my opinion is the 110. In Australia they were
fitted with an Isuzu 4BD1 engine of 3.9 litres I think. They are noisy but
quite powerful. They also have coil suspension and disc brakes. The earlier
Landrovers only had unassisted drum brakes and if heavily loaded, a prayer
was required to help stop.

All Aust Landrovers were available in cargo, FFR and cab/chasis versions.
They came as soft tops or hard tops. There were short wheelbase (88")
versions of the 2 and 2A, the Aust Army only took the Series 3 as a long
wheelbase (109")

Hope this helps.

Cheers
