A M-880 was basically a slightly modified off the shelf Dodge
4X4 pick-up, it had a 12V/24V electrical system for a military
radio, a standard military trailer connection, and black out drive.
The Army bought them to phase out the M-715 in 1976-77.
The M-880 was the 5/4 ton troop/cargo version. Other variations
included a shelter carrier (with a beefed up suspension),a radio
rig (880 w/a radio rack) and a contact maintenance truck. They
were phased out of the Army by the M1008/M1009 CUCV in
1986-87. Ironically because the Army dragged their feet on
issuing a CUCV variation of a contact maintenance truck
many Reserve and National Guard units took M-887(M-880
series) contact maintenance trucks to the Gulf War. The only
gas burners there.
