I have been redoing the steering linkages on my 1945MB, and do not recall which
way the drag link gets installed.
The drag link has a slotted opening on each end to accept the ball from (1) the
pitman arm, and (2) the piviot arm. The positions of the slotted openings on
each end are not symetrical -- One is inset more than the other by about half an
inch.
QUESTION 1: Which side attaches to the pitman arm? (At present I installed the
end with the greater offset (ball opening farther from the end of the drag link)
on the pitman arm ball -- Is this correct?)
The instructions tell you to screw the socket plug in firmly against the ball,
and then back off (1) one full turn for the pitman arm, and (2) one-half turn
for the piviot arm (intermediate steering arm).
QUESTION 2: Does this mean to compress the spring as much as possible, or just
to make solid contact before backing off the socket plug?
QUESTION 3: Does anyone know the reason for different arrangements for the
springs, ball seats, spring seats, and socket plugs? Also, why the different
back-off instructions. (Note, in an M170 front line ambulance manual for the
M38A1, it instructs that the socket plugs be backed off one-quarter turn and
one-half turn --- Anyone know why the differences here?)
Thanks in advance, Herb
